Athletic Director Interview

By MHS Journalism Students Ricky Powell, Chrissey Owens, and Sadie Willett

McClain journalism students recently had the privilege to interview new athletic director Trevor Arnett. Arnett talked about his experiences thus far, his career goals, and major influences in his life.

Q: Why did you decide to be involved in Athletic Directing?

A: My dad (Bo Arnett) is actually an athletic director. When I went to high school, he was the athletic director there at the high school I attended. I got to see first hand what is involved and what you do. My dad always enjoyed his job. It was something I was always interested in. I got the opportunity to do it when I came here, so I decided to take that opportunity.

Q: What does an athletic director do?

A: All of the behind-the-scenes work that goes on at any of your athletic events. I schedule the officials, schedule teams, make sure the venues are ready and make sure the teams have buses to get on. The goal is, if an athletic event goes on and everything goes according to plan, then I’ve done my job. I make sure that things go smoothly.

Q: What college did you go to?

A: Ohio University.

Q: Was there any particular classes that you took to be an athletic director?

A: Not really. My education was focused in science because I was a science teacher for the past 3 years. The athletic director side of things usually comes from experience as a coach, and (for me) family experience.

Q: When did you take over as the athletic director for McClain schools?

A: I took over last spring, around April or May. I was trying to learn the ropes and do a few things here and there.

Q: How do you think you will benefit from athletic directing?

A: It is a career path that I will enjoy, it was something I always wanted to do. From a lifestyle perspective, it has given me what I wanted (in a career).

Q: What do you look forward to in your career as an athletic director?

A: To help build a successful athletics program here at McClain.

Q: Would you like to mention family, friends or something interesting?

A: My father is my mentor and motivation when it comes to athletic directing. He is always at sporting events, and Mom (Valerie Arnett) got me from here and there, and a thanks to my fiance (Laura Mustard) for putting up with the long hours. (Most of the) nights this week I have not gotten home til after 10 or 10:30. I am thankful that she allows me to pursue the job that I want to do.
