COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS BREAK 2025 - This year as we have in the past, we are counting down the 15 school days until break by sharing some facts about our district. This year's theme is a continuation of last year’s theme...

Alphabetical order!

Day 5 - R
R is for Robotics, Roar, and Rah-Rah!

Robotics - The McClain High School Robotics Team started in 2017. Students build robots from scratch and compete against other schools in strategic challenges to score points. Some strategies are completed by students using a remote control, while other times students build codes for their robots to operate autonomously. Check out these teams from the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years!

Daily Roar - The McClain Daily Roar started in 2018 as a way for students to broadcast all high school announcements. It’s an opportunity for students to create, produce, and direct a news broadcast like you would see on television. It is 100% student-led with Mr. Drew Hamilton serving as the facilitator. To see the students in action in the studio is an amazing experience! Check out these pictures from the 2018-2019, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 school years!

Rah-Rah - For decades, cheerleaders have led crowds of students, their families, and community members in cheering on our athletes. Without them, Tiger Nation would not be the same. Check out these pictures from the 1959-1960, 1974-1975, 1985-1986, 1996-1997, and 2014-2015 school years!

Homecoming Queens - Homecoming festivities have been conducted in different ways over the decades, but the tradition has always remained strong. The hairstyles and dress designs have definitely changed over time! Check out these queens and attendants from 1955, 1973, 1976, 1989, and 2011!

Day 3 - P
P is for Pep Club, Pages, Pad, and PTO/PTA Fall Festival/Carnival!

Pep Club - The purpose of the Pep Club was to work with the cheerleaders in promoting school spirit in all activities. The Pep Club lives on today in our student sections at events. Recently we posted a supplemental position for Pep Club Advisor so that we can continue to build school spirit for our students. The pictures included show the Pep Club members from the 1968 Dragon, advised by Miss Mikesell, and the members from the 1969 Dragon, advised by Mrs. Lynch.

McClain Pages - The McClain Pages began during the 1963-1964 school year. The club was devoted to promoting interest in the high school library. Over the years, the club promoted reading among the student body by holding a favorite book contest. They also purchased a microfilm reader and printer for the library. The club’s name later changed to the Library Club. The pictures included show members from the 1963-1964 and 1970-1971 school years.

Horse Collar Pad - Edward Lee McClain perfected the detachable horse collar pad and went on to create the American Pad and Textile Factory that evolved into a company with a product line that included lifesaving vests for the military in WWII. McClain was an innovator and entrepreneur, and with money made contributed to our main campus facilities that are still in place and operating today. Pictured is a horse collar pad and its tag.

PTO/PTA Fall Festival/Carnival - We find that many alumni cherish their memories of fall festivals and carnivals that were held in the old bus garage. Enjoy these fantastic pictures from 1966, 1967, 1969, and 1970!

Day 2 - O
O is for Omega Club, Opening Night, and Office Staff!

During the 1954-1955 school year, McClain High School implemented a photography club for the first time in many years. The Omega Club began with 26 charter members, consisting of boys and girls interested in photography. The club met in the chemistry room and had access to a full darkroom, a 4x5 Speed Graphic Press Camera, an Omega enlarger, and other equipment necessary for the operation of the club. They raised money by taking pictures of elementary and junior high student groups and by having bake sales. In later years, the club held a contest in which all members were required to submit a photograph. Included in this post are the first and second place photos from the 1964-1965 school year taken by Steve Iseman (2nd place) and Roland Yankee (1st place). Also included is a picture of the charter members.

The performing arts at McClain High School have long been treasured by the students, staff, and community. Opening Night has become a longstanding tradition when a variety of talents are shared for the enjoyment of all. Check out these pictures from Opening Night in 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2013!

Everyone knows that the office staff members keep schools running like a well oiled machine. Our district has been fortunate to have COUNTLESS office staff members who have helped to make things run smoothly. Check out those pictured here from 1932, 1978, 1998, and 2021!

Day 1 - N
N is for Nutrition and National ___________!

Why the blank line? Because there have been a number of national organizations and awards present in our district. We learned about a few we didn’t know about and would love to hear from past members or recipients!

Many people don’t think about the role that the school district plays in a child’s nutrition. The picture included in the post shows the cafeteria staff and FIFTY student workers who served lunches during the 1955-1956 school year. Together, they served an average of 730 students each school day. Even as far back as at least that school year, school lunch programs were monitored. That year, Mrs. Dorothea Weimer, state auditor, included the following statement in her report: “The food was good, well prepared, attractively served, and the serving line moved fast.” All lunches met the State Lunch Type A, and a typical lunch would be a baked ham sandwich served on a bun, green beans, corn, fruit salad, a cookie, and milk. Each day, they would go through 60 loaves of bread and approximately 840 half pints of milk.

National Honor Society - In the earlier years of McClain High School, only seniors could be inducted into the National Honor Society, which was recognized as the highest honor. Other students could qualify for the Scholarship “M”, meaning that they maintained an average of 95% for a semester. Pictures included in the post are from the 1925, 1934, and 1966 Dragons.

National Athletic Scholarship Society - The organization started in 1925 by a group of high school principals recognized male athletes for their achievements. The pictures included in the post are in the 1961 Dragon.

National Thespian Society - This group was composed of both students and teachers who were dedicated to the advancement of dramatics and literature. The group pictured was part of the organization in the 1958-1959 school year.

National Poetry Anthology and National Essay Anthology - Check out these pictures from the 1969 and 1970 Dragons. We would love to know more about those pictured and their recognition!

National Forensic League - Although pictured with the debate team, we are unsure as to whether the groups were connected in some way. The pictures in the post are from the 1972 and 1973 Dragons. We would love to learn more about the National Forensic League!
