COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS BREAK 2025 - This year as we have in the past, we are counting down the 15 school days until break by sharing some facts about our district. This year's theme is a continuation of last year’s theme...
Alphabetical order!
Day 1 - N
N is for Nutrition and National ___________!
Why the blank line? Because there have been a number of national organizations and awards present in our district. We learned about a few we didn’t know about and would love to hear from past members or recipients!
Many people don’t think about the role that the school district plays in a child’s nutrition. The picture included in the post shows the cafeteria staff and FIFTY student workers who served lunches during the 1955-1956 school year. Together, they served an average of 730 students each school day. Even as far back as at least that school year, school lunch programs were monitored. That year, Mrs. Dorothea Weimer, state auditor, included the following statement in her report: “The food was good, well prepared, attractively served, and the serving line moved fast.” All lunches met the State Lunch Type A, and a typical lunch would be a baked ham sandwich served on a bun, green beans, corn, fruit salad, a cookie, and milk. Each day, they would go through 60 loaves of bread and approximately 840 half pints of milk.
National Honor Society - In the earlier years of McClain High School, only seniors could be inducted into the National Honor Society, which was recognized as the highest honor. Other students could qualify for the Scholarship “M”, meaning that they maintained an average of 95% for a semester. Pictures included in the post are from the 1925, 1934, and 1966 Dragons.
National Athletic Scholarship Society - The organization started in 1925 by a group of high school principals recognized male athletes for their achievements. The pictures included in the post are in the 1961 Dragon.
National Thespian Society - This group was composed of both students and teachers who were dedicated to the advancement of dramatics and literature. The group pictured was part of the organization in the 1958-1959 school year.
National Poetry Anthology and National Essay Anthology - Check out these pictures from the 1969 and 1970 Dragons. We would love to know more about those pictured and their recognition!
National Forensic League - Although pictured with the debate team, we are unsure as to whether the groups were connected in some way. The pictures in the post are from the 1972 and 1973 Dragons. We would love to learn more about the National Forensic League!
