Matt Shelton, McClain High School Principal
A HUGE shoutout to our maintenance and custodial team - Without them, our campuses would not look as wonderful as they do. Thank you! 😊
Now, for Day 15 - Winter and Christmas scenes across the decades!

Day 14 - M
M is for Marching Band, Majorettes, and Mermaids!
➡️ The first marching band was formed in the 1927-1928 school year. In the early years, younger children were included in the band along with the high school students. The picture shows them posing in front of the current middle school building (what was then the elementary school). It's interesting to think that the building was only 3-4 years old when the picture was taken! Other marching bands pictured are from the following school years: 1938-1939, 1940-1941, and 1943-1944.
➡️ Majorettes have played an active part in the marching band for many decades. The picture from the 1950-1951 school year shows the majorettes and the first-ever female drum majorette to lead the marching band. Other majorettes pictured are from the 1968-1969 school year and the 1972-1973 school year.
➡️ The McClain Mermaids, a synchronized swimming club, were active during the 1960s and 1970s. The Mermaids, and the first-year participants know as the Starfish, presented a variety of different shows.

Day 13 - M
We will be doing two days for the letter M. For the first day, M stands for...M!
In 1920, the McClain High School male students started receiving the letter M for participation in athletics. Those who received either a single, double, triple, or quadruple M were known as the "M" Men. In 1930, the group became known as the "M" Club, and later, the Varsity "M" Club. It was expected that the club would create greater fellowship among athletes, as well as, among community members during athletic events. They awarded letters and answered any sports questions that were asked.
In 1934, the Girls' Athletic Association was organized by Miss Isabel Buck. Chevrons were awarded each year to girls earning 1,000 points in physical education work, specifically gym class, swimming, inter-class contests, and field work. Could this organization have been created in response to the "M" Club since there were no organized sports for female students?
Based on the research, both organizations were no longer in place after the early 1940s, although athletes of course continued to receive letters.
Pictured are:
1. The insignia used in the 1919-1920 school year
2. A banquet for the 1920-1921 "M" Men
3. A list of the "M" Men from the 1921-1922 school year
4. "M" Men/Club members from the years 1929-1938
5. The 1935-1936 Girls' Athletic Association members

Day 12 - L
L is for Library, Lanes, Lunch, Latin Club, and Laurel Oaks!
➡️ Library - We have featured the library in past years, and many know that the current library began as the study hall. Look closely at this picture. Notice anything missing? Well, not missing...it just isn't there yet...🤔
➡️ Lanes - Like bowling lanes! The first bowling team at McClain High School was established during the 2014-2015 school year. They are pictured in this post along with the team in the 2020-2021 school year, a historic time of masks and team pictures created with individual pictures because of social distancing.
➡️ Lunch - Education could not occur without the wonderful staff members who feed our students. Pictured are cafeteria staff members from 1969 and 1987. Also pictured are the staff members and student workers in 1950, known as cafeteria aides at that time. 💜💛
➡️ Latin Club - If you are new to the district you may not know that Latin was offered as a course in addition to the opportunity to join Latin Club. Pictured are the Latin Club members from the 1970-1971 and 1976-1977 school years.
➡️ Laurel Oaks - Students from McClain High School have had an opportunity to attend school at Laurel Oaks for at least 40 years. Students continue to attend there and have an opportunity to select from a variety of different programs. Pictured are students who attended at Laurel Oaks in 1983 and 1990.

Day 11 - K
We know it is the twelfth day, BUT the poster missed yesterday due to other activities. We are catching up by making two posts today. 😊
K is for (Class) Knocker, Kicks, and Kids!
➡️ For many decades, a Class Knocker was included in the Dragon. The students who wrote the Knocker created jokes about the seniors. Some of the jokes written over the years were quite ornery! Check out the ones in this post from 1924, 1951, and 1960.
➡️ Kicks - Let's talk soccer! The first soccer team at McClain High School played in the fall of 2003. The first few years, the high school had a co-ed team. In 2006, there was a JV team and a varsity soccer team. Then in 2008, there were two varsity teams - one for girls and one for boys.
➡️ Kids - In the 1980s, the Dragon staff started including a section dedicated to past pictures of seniors. This evolved into parents submitting baby/childhood pictures with special messages for their seniors. Check out these kids from the 1984, 1987, and 1990 Dragons. 💜💛

Day 10 - J
J is for Junior Red Cross Council and Jerseys!
➡️ The Junior Red Cross Council consisted of two students from each homeroom in grades 1-12. Some of the projects completed by the organization include the collection of sales tax stamps, creating gift boxes for children in other countries, and contributing to the Children's Service Fund. Pictured are the council members in 1947 and 1948.
➡️ Athletic jerseys have changed SO MUCH over the years! The pictures posted show jerseys ranging from the 1930s to the 1990s. Can you guess the decade for each picture? You'll also notice that one of the pictures shows a junior high team. Junior high students were pictured in the Dragon for many decades.

Day 9 - I
I is for Industry, Industrial Arts, and the IT OGs - The Projectionists and the beginning of TV and Radio!
➡️ We would be remiss not to mention the industry established by Edward Lee McClain. In 1881, he began manufacturing horse collar pads with two employees. By 1887, the E. L. McClain Manufacturing Company was putting out 300 dozen horse collar pads each day. Pictured are a horse collar pad and a sweat pad.
➡️ The Industrial Arts, or Vocational Industrial, Club was charted in November 1957. The purpose of the club was to provide opportunities for the development of civic, social, and industrial pursuits. Pictured are club members from the following school years: 1957-1958, 1960-1961, and 1976-1977.
➡️ The Projectionist Club was established during the 1960-1961 school year. Club members were taught how to care for, repair, and use audio-visual equipment. They assisted teachers and different organizations with the use of the equipment. Pictured are the Projectionists from the following school years: 1962-1963, 1964-1965, and 1971-1972. In addition, TV production and broadcasting began at McClain High School in 1986, bringing a whole new way to communicate information across the campus and surrounding community.

Day 8 - H
H is for Hi-Y, Homecoming, and Honor Students!
➡️ Hi-Y began as a YMCA Club for boys in the 1800s. A club was organized in 1928 at McClain High School by a group of senior and junior boys with Coach Richard Larkin as sponsor. Girls were not able to participate in Hi-Y until the early 1970s, but in the past, girls could participate in the counterpart - the Y-Teen Club. Pictured are the 1928-1929 Hi-Y Club members, the 1947-1948 Y-Teens, and the 1974-1975 Hi-Y Club consisting of both male and female students.
➡️ In 1938, Miss Ruth Louise Hill was chosen as the Football Queen during the last home game of the season. The first mention of a Homecoming game was later in 1943 with Glenna Cogan being selected as Queen and Sally Lou Reifinger and Dorothy Martin as attendants. Sadly, there is no picture. The next mention of a Homecoming Queen came in 1947 with a fantastic picture included in this post. Also pictured are the 1958 Homecoming Queen and her court, scenes from the 1963 Homecoming week, a great 1973 Homecoming Snake Dance picture, and scenes from the 1976 Homecoming week.
➡️ Even with a National Honor Society affiliation beginning in 1922, the group of students selected for meeting the established criteria were known just as Honor Students. As is the same today, students had to meet criteria based on academics, leadership, and good character in order to be eligible for selection by the faculty. Pictured are the first group of Honor Students from the 1921-1922 school year and the Honor Students from the 1946-1947 school year.

Day 7 - G
G is for Golf, Guidance Counselors, and Gymnasiums!
➡️ The first golf team at McClain High School was established in 1965. They are pictured in this post. Also pictured is the Fall 1968 team, which was coached by Mr. John Miller. Coach Miller stated that the golfers were hampered that year due to a lack of experience, but the other schools would pay in a couple of years. Also pictured are the Fall 1982 team with a regular season record of 16-5 and the Fall 1995 team with a regular season record of 17-4. The 1995 team members were also state qualifiers!
➡️ Based on the records available, Mrs. Florence Zimmerman may have been the first guidance counselor at McClain High School during the 1957-1958 school year. In addition to the "Guidance" title, she also taught English and Speech Arts. For a few years following, there is no evidence of a guidance counselor working at the high school until 1962 when Mr. Samuel Borst was identified with the specific title of guidance counselor.
➡️ Gymnasiaums have played such an integral part in our school district for over 100 years. Included in this post are some student and graduate viewpoints on the old gym in 1916. They are very interesting to read! The other pictures were taken by MHS Class of 1974 Graduate Doug Daniels. Mr. Daniels documented the construction of the new gym through some fantastic photos.
Want to see more photos and take a walk down memory lane? Come out Friday evening and help us celebrate 50 years of the New Gym! The MHS JV boys game will begin at 6:00 p.m. Varsity will follow immediately after with a brief celebration ceremony before the start of the game. Interested in dinner beforehand? We would like to invite you to be part of something special. 🎶💜💛🎶 Our district is excited to kick off an auditorium revitalization project. Constructed in 1915, the McClain High School auditorium has been a treasure in our community for over one hundred years, hosting countless performances and events leading to memories that last a lifetime. While its history is rich, time has taken its toll after the renovations made almost 40 years ago. We now have a unique opportunity to restore and enhance this iconic space for future generations. Our revitalization project will focus on upgrading the sound and lighting systems and replacing the seating, carpet, and curtains. These updates will honor the building’s historic charm while ensuring that it continues to meet the needs and support the experiences of current and future performers. We are thrilled for you to join us in bringing this vision of revitalization to life! Your support can make a meaningful impact. If you have questions regarding the information in this post, please contact us. 😊

Join us on Friday, December 13, 2024, to celebrate the McClain High School “new gym” turning 50 years old. The first basketball game held in the gym was played on November 26, 1974. The Tigers came out with a three-point win that day over Miami Trace.
We will have a small ceremony prior to the start of the varsity boys basketball game. JV tip will be at 6:00 p.m. with varsity to follow.
We would LOVE to recognize anyone who helped to construct the gymnasium, played/coached during that time, and/or had anything else to do with the establishment of the facility. Please use the link below to complete the form to be considered for recognition. Someone will be in touch with you prior to the December 13 game.

E is for Edward and Eddie!
➡️ Edward Lee McClain
1. Excerpt 1:
December 5, 1912 Edition of The Greenfield Republican
Taken from the article: In Her Stocking - Greenfield Will Find a Magnificant New High School Building, Erected on a Beautiful Campus in the Heart of the City
"There is a universal expression, over the city, of extreme gratification and community obligation to Mr. McClain for the generosity and civic pride characterized by this great donation which, according to people posted in such matters, will give Greenfield the best school facilities of any city of its size in the state."
2. Excerpt 2:
Taken from the April 1914 Dragon
Directory of Alumni
"Edward Lee McClain, Manufacturer. Born in Greenfield, May 30, 1861; educated in the Greenfield Schools; has always resided in Greenfield. Donor of the magnificent new High School building. Married Lulu Theodosia Johnson, Dec. 17, 1884. Founder of the American Pad and Textile Company of Greenfield, Chatham, Ontario and Chillicothe; the American Textile Company of Atco, Georgia; The Crescent Mfg. Co., Lousiville, Ky.; President of the Sand Mixing Co. of New York City. Mr. McClain's name has been inseparably associated with Greenfield's growth and development."
The pictures show Edward Lee McClain at different ages.

Day 4 - D
D is for Dragon, Dramatics, and Dances!
➡️ The first issue of the Dragon was published in 1904. As shared previously, the Dragon began as a publication that was issued multiple times during the school year. The 1916 Dragon staff deemed that year as the most prosperous in history. Specifically, three publications that year were the most popular - the Gymnasium Number illustrated with school teams and gym classes, the Souvenir Number commemorating the new building, and the Senior Annual. In its early years, the Dragon won several awards. Pictured is the cover of a 1904 Dragon publication, the 1916 Dragon staff, and the 1920 Dragon staff.
➡️ Dramatic performances have been part of our history since the time of Greenfield High School. Troupe 400 of the National Thespian Organization was installed at McClain High School on February 5, 1940. During that year there were 55 Thespians in the group, making for the largest charter group in the smallest Thespian school. This group is pictured in this post. Whether it's musicals, plays, Spectacular, Cabaret, Opening Night, Senior Day Assembly, Show Choir, or countless other performances or groups, the talent that has crossed the stage in the McClain High School auditorium is immeasurable. Pictured are the 1909 cast of Midsummer Night's Dream, scenes from the 1987 Cabaret, the 2006 Show Choir, and scenes from the 2008 Opening Night.
➡️ It is unknown how long dances were being held as part of the Greenfield High School or McClain High School history, BUT we do know that Prom and the All Night Party started being featured in the Dragon in the 1960s. "Underwater Paradise" was the theme of the All Night Party on May 28, 1965. The event was held at the Greenfield Armory. Little Macy provided music until midnight when at that time the students traveled to the Rand Theater to watch a movie. After the movie, the students returned to the armory where the Vadicans played music until dawn. A couple of pictures are included in this post. Also, pictured are scenes from the 1965 Prom.

Day 3 - C
C is for Cadets, Cheerleaders, and Clodhoppers!
➡️ Previous research and documentation led us to believe that the original Cadets of McClain High School were established in 1921, BUT instead, they were actually established at least as early as 1920. There is no other information currently available other than the information and pictures from 1920 and 1921. Can you tell where the 1920 pictures were taken based on the houses in the background?
➡️ Cheerleaders have been in place at McClain High School since at least the 1920s with both boys and girls being involved. One of the cheers used by the 1929 group pictured was:
Bumble Bees-Hornets-Yellowjackets
Bumble Bees-Hornets-Yellowjackets
Bumble Bees-Hornets-Yellowjackets

McCLAIN YELLOWJACKETS
Prior to trying out for cheerleading, students voted for one student from each grade level to represent the class on the cheerleading squad. Other cheerleaders pictured are from the years 1939, 1951, 1971, and 1978. Take a close look at those 1971 cheerleaders...
➡️ The Clodhoppers were established in the 1920-1921 school year. One interesting thing to take note of is how club names were sometimes published differently in the Dragon. Whether it's the Clodhoppers, Clodhoppers' Club, or the Clodhopper Society, the organization was the foundation of our current FFA. The group was originally only for boys and was specifically meant for those interested in farming. The work of the first group included "testing 10,000 ears of corn for farmers in the laboratories." In 1928, the name changed to the Progressive Farmers. Then later that year, the group became affiliated with the national organization Future Farmers of America. Pictured are the Clodhoppers of 1921 and 1924.
